Award-Winning Historical Fiction is Waiting for You!

Hello and welcome! You’ve opened the door, now step inside and visit the past with me.

My Work

I write historical fiction, focussing on historical biography. The women in all of my historical novels are real and had a major role in the men’s stories, but end up in the men’s footnotes. I pull them out from the bottom of the page and give them a voice.

I do a lot of research for each novel because telling a story is one thing, but immersing a reader completely in a past world is another. I ensure every detail of a woman’s life is accurate, from the clothing to the art to the food. As a result I’ve created a decent collection of recipe and medical books from hundreds of years ago. My research has taken me to Medieval England, Merovingian France, and Renaissance Italy. Next up is 17th century Germany and Holland.

Me

A little about me: I started writing in high school and have always been fascinated by history, particularly Medieval and Renaissance history. I eventually earned a degree in the subject.

Writing and history merged naturally when I started writing full-time a few years ago. I live in a cozy house in Canada, but I spent 20 years living in a Grade Two listed building (and loving) in England.

In my alternate identity as Lady Matilda, I post satirical articles on managing your medieval manor during the Black Death. (Read them Here)

News

After writing part two of Caterina Sforza’s life, I wrote a satirical novella called A Stable Husband. If you like Black Adder or Monty Python AND Bridgerton or Jane Austen, this is the story for you!

I’ve started teaching a Meet the Tudors course at one of our vibrant community centres. The first session has passed and people enjoyed it so much, no one wanted to stop at break time.

What’s Next?

I’m currently writing my next historical fiction novel which takes place in Tudor times. Watch this space!

A Snapshot of My Novels (Historical Fiction, Historical Horror)

Historical Fiction

The Northern Queen (Anglo-Saxon/Early Medieval England)

The Story of Aelfgifu of Northampton, wife and supporter of Cnut the Great and the Danish invaders, and her enemy, Emma of Normandy. Love, ambition and revenge combine in an epic struggle during one of England’s most turbulent periods.

The Confessor’s Wife (Early Medieval England)

In the 11th Century, when barren wives are customarily cast aside, how does Edith of Wessex not only manage to stay married to King Edward the Confessor, but also become his closest advisor, promote her family to the highest offices in the land, AND help raise her brother to the throne?

Elizabeth: Path to the Throne (Tudor England)

When King Henry VIII executes his second wife Anne Boleyn for treason, the young Princess Elizabeth is left to navigate the perilous waters of the Tudor court without her mother. Can she survive the treacherous path fate has set her? And who can she trust on her journey to the throne?

The Beggar Queen (Early Medieval Merovingian France)

Kidnapped in 7th century England and sold as a slave to a powerful mayor in France, Bathilde needs to adapt to survive. How did a slave navigate the treacherous Merovingian courts and rise to rule an empire? And why have so few people heard of her?

Unfinished: The Inspired Life of Elisabetta Sirani (Renaissance Italy)

Elisabetta Sirani’s life was frustrating. But she painted over 200 pieces before her tragic death. Her fame has been eclipsed by her male counterparts. Doubted, scorned, admired, and misunderstood, this is her story.

Turning the World to Stone: The Life of Caterina Sforza Part One 1472 – 1488 (Renaissance Italy)

Vilified by history, Caterina Sforza learned early that her life was not her own. Married at age ten, she was a pawn in the ever-changing political environment of Renaissance Italy. But Fate had other plans for her, and soon Caterina’s path would be plagued by murder, betrayal, and heartbreak.

Turning the World to Stone: The Life of Caterina Sforza Part Two 1488 to 1509 (Renaissance Italy)

In part two of Caterina’s turbulent story, her path is strewn with more pain, death, and bloodshed, and must keep fighting for her rights as a ruler. When she faces the Borgia Pope’s eldest son, Cesare, Caterina is fighting for more than her lands: this time she’s fighting for her life.

Novellas

The Strange Tale of Miss Victoria Frank (Inspired by Mary Shelley)

When famed scientist Nikola Tesla meets Victoria Frank, he’s intrigued. But she’s hiding a horrendous family secret. He has a decision to make: stay away, or help her with her own terrible science.

Stubborn: A Greek Comedy (Satirical Prose)

The women of Greece are tired of men’s worrying ways, so they hatch a plan: renounce sex. Will the task be long and hard? And will it work or will the men get stiffed?

A Stable Husband (A Regency Satire)

14 Sisters of marriageable age, an unwanted arrangement, and a handsome stable hand. What could possibly go wrong?

Horror

The Mortecarni (Medieval/13th Century Horror

Europe is in the grips of the Black Death. But something more sinister lurks nearby. Is it one of the undead Mortecarni, or the Black Death? Only Brother Maurice can figure it out.

Revelation: The Mortecarni Part Two (Medieval/13th Century Horror)

The Black Death continues to ravage Europe. So do the Mortecarni. But Brother Maurice is back and on the case.

Monsters & Misfits (Horror Short Stories and Poems)

An infamous psychiatric hospital seeks revenge. An unusual encounter on a lonely road. A tongue-in-cheek tale of Tudor executioners. And a man who dreams of selling you cheese. Something for everyone.

Hi Kelly, just wondered if there are plans to release your book for kindle? Or will it remain as a book?
(Will your book remain a book? Sounds stupid, but you know what I mean 🙂 )

Okay, if I don’t spot it on the Nordland site will you let me know please. I’m fighting a losing battle with my wife to reduce books and save space! So I tend to get most fiction on my kindle. But your book does look cool, though.Congratulations.

I just finished The Northern Queen and loved it. I’ll admit that any book set in 11th Century England already has my vote. But then I read yours and discovered that is well researched and superbly written. I’ve only got one word for you… MORE… please!!

    1. Kelly Evans's avatar

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Emma of Normandy is also in the second AS book, The Confessor’s Wife, there’s an excerpt on another page here!

    Hi Kelly Evans,

I’ve never been an avid reader, but somehow I came across The Beggar Queen, and I was captivated. I’ve read so many of your novels now, and it’s a complete joy to feel so fully immersed in the era you are focused on. What an interesting way to learn something historical. At 63, I am finally becoming an avid reader!

      Regards,

      Kelly
